What Is The Best Currency To Use In Laos?
The official currency of Laos is the Lao Kip (LAK). In most places in Laos, you will need to use Kip to pay for goods and services. US dollars and Thai baht are also accepted in some tourist areas, particularly in larger cities and towns, but the exchange rates may not be favorable.
If you plan to visit Laos, it's a good idea to bring a mix of cash in different denominations, including kip, US dollars, and/or Thai baht, depending on your preference. However, because most transactions are done in kips, it is always a good idea to keep some in your pocket. There are banknotes in denominations of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, and 100,000 LAK.
You can exchange foreign currency for kip at banks, exchange counters, and some hotels in major cities. Credit cards are accepted at some upscale hotels and restaurants, but it's always a good idea to carry cash as a backup, especially in more remote areas where credit card machines may not be available.
ATMs may be found across Laos. It is crucial to remember that the maximum transaction limit varies per bank and ranges between 700,000 and 2,000,000 LAK (approx. 85-250 US $).
